Li Wenxiu, the proud and brilliant Director of the Imperial Music Bureau, believes that true artistry belongs only to the refined world of the court. One day, he encounters Pan’er, a village girl who sings folk songs while selling kites in the marketplace. Her raw and untrained voice moves him deeply.

Determined to prove that true beauty can come from anywhere, Wenxiu makes an audacious decision: to transform this humble village girl into the court’s next great singer.

But ambition, jealousy and hidden schemes soon surface within the palace walls. When everything begins to fall apart, Pan’er chooses to sing the most honest song she knows — and in doing so, challenges the very meaning of art, status, and freedom.
